A 42-year-old father, Mr. Edet Etok-Akpan, is currently being quizzed at the headquarters of the Cross River State Police Command in Calabar for torturing his six-year-old daughter, Edidiong, as a result of a church prophetess’ pronouncement that the girl was a witch.
Edidiong was beaten by her father and locked up in a room with her hands, mouth and face bound for four days before she was rescued by neighbours.
It was learnt that Etok-Akpan started beating her on February 19 after an unidentified prophetess in their church told him that Edidiong was the witch responsible for the stagnancy in his life.
Narrating her ordeal to PUNCH Metro on Monday, Edidiong said after the beatings which lasted for some days, her father on February 21 tied her hands with a cord and bound her mouth with a piece of cloth.
She said, “He locked me in the inner room of our house and he never gave me food and never allowed me to go to school.”

A 67 year-old grandmother from Australia has been found dead in South Africa where she travelled to meet a 28 year-old Nigerian she met on an online dating site.The woman, Jette Jacobs was found dead in a Johannesburg guest house in February, two days after she met up with a man calling himself Jesse Orowo Omokoh.According to AU News, the pair struck up an online relationship three years ago. In 2010, Jacobs travelled to South Africa to meet him before he proposed late last year. Over several years she sent over $100,000 to him.It is absolutely fraught with danger and we would say don’t sent money to anybody that you have met on the computer. We also strongly urge people not to travel overseas to meet someone they have met on the computer.” The Police are still searching for Omokoh.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has identified lack of quality leadership as a major hindrance to development in Nigeria and other African countries.
Obasanjo, who acknowledged that Nigeria and Africa had enormous potential, said it was only quality leadership that could bring such to realisation.
He spoke on Saturday in Abeokuta during the final of Africa Region Intercollegiate Debate on Human Security Africa, organised by the Centre for Human Security, (CHS), an arm of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.
The former President said the leadership in any country was important to development and growth.
He said: “On the topic you have chosen for this debate, ‘Human security in Africa’, whether it’s a myth or reality, threat to human security, high economic growth, whether it is flash in the pan or sustainable.
“All comes to one major thing and that one major thing is leadership.
“I realise that we have many Nigerians and there are not many good leaders in Nigeria.
Around 10 pm on Saturday 2nd of March, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Chinwike Asadu, was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the Amorji Nike area in Enugu State. Less than five years after Nigeria-only gay church, House of Rainbow, was attacked by some Lagos residents and consequently closed down in Nigeria, the church has returned to the country with three secret groups in the African most populous nation.

A tradomedical practitioner in Lagos has claimed that a 20-year old woman delivered a tortoise and a baby girl in his clinic.
The woman, Rasheedat Raimi, said she had carried the pregnancy for 10 months before she eventually delivered the baby girl and the tortoise at a trado-medical clinic on Mutairu Street, Off Ijegun Road, outskirts of Lagos. She was in pains as she talked to P.M.NEWS about the strange delivery.
"I came to Yakafi for prayers because of the terrible pains I was having in my stomach. Immediately I got here, prayers were offered and immediately there was a burst of water and blood under me. The tortoise came out with the placenta and the baby came out later. I couldn't believe my eyes, but I was very weak. I was happy the pain left me. I felt relieved after the delivery. I thank God," she told P.M.NEWS slowly.
On whether she attended ante-natal clinic before the delivery, the young woman said: "I carried the pregnancy for 10 months. I did scans several times and nobody told me that I was carrying tortoise in my womb. What they always told me was that I am alright and would deliver at the right time," she added.

The Minister of Interior Abba Moro, said yesterday that about 16,000 illegal immigrants have been deported from Nigeria.
Moro, who disclosed this in an interview in Kaduna after commissioning Borstal Training Institution’s clinic, said as part of efforts to get rid the country of illegal immigrants, the existing eight zonal structures of the Nigerian Immigration Service have been re-designated into screening centres and officers have been appointed to man the centres.
According to him, the officials are charged with the responsibilities of identifying and screening illegal immigrants.
