Nigeria Deported 16,000 Illegal Immigrants

The Minister of Interior Abba Moro, said yesterday that about 16,000 illegal immigrants have been deported from Nigeria.
Moro, who disclosed this in an interview in Kaduna after commissioning Borstal Training Institution’s clinic, said as part of efforts to get rid the country of illegal immigrants, the existing eight zonal structures of the Nigerian Immigration Service have been re-designated into screening centres and officers have been appointed to man the centres.
According to him, the officials are charged with the responsibilities of identifying and screening illegal immigrants.
“It is paying off, since the inauguration of the screening centres, they have been able to
repatriate and in some cases deport well over 16,000 illegal immigrants,” he said.
He said that the Ministry of Interior has entered into agreements with neighbouring countries including Niger, Chad, Cameroon and to some extent Benin Republic to ensure a joint patrol of the country’s borders, adding that efforts are ongoing to get the records of all aliens who are in Nigeria whether legally or illegally.
